Old Town Hall

The town hall underground gives insight into the time of the origin of the Old Town. The city level was then several metres lower than today’s level. The city terrain had to be artificially increased due to fre-quent flooding, so that already in the 13th century the original ground-floors of the houses became under-grounds. The oldest part of the Old Town Hall’s underground is the Roman hall from the 2nd half of the 12th century, preserved are also the foundations of the tower, a hundred years younger. Wells and a cisterns for rainwater are located there. Naturally, there used to be prisons under the town hall, two of them can be seen even today. The use of the underground space by prisoners is evidenced by their names engraved on one of the Gothic portals. A sacred place with a cross of charred beams reminding the last days of the Second World War when the Old Town Hall was largely destroyed is also part of the under-ground.

Tours through the historic area of the Old waste water treatment plant will give you an opportunity to see the original water treatment. The Old waste water treatment plant isn’t a typical museum, it’s something close to a „technique castle“. The visitors can admire historic premises of the museum incl. the remains of original technologies for waste water treatment and connected operations (such as sludge management) or for drive of machines (steam-engine room and boiler-room).
